In this edition of The Wedding Series Expert Series, we speak with Melinda about her creative process, the importance of intentional styling, and how florals and design come together to shape unforgettable wedding experiences.

Your work is known for creating weddings that feel layered, romantic and deeply personal. How do you begin translating a couple’s story into a complete floral and styling concept?

For me, every wedding begins with the couple themselves.  How they want their day to feel, not just how they want it to look. I spend time getting to know their story, their style, the atmosphere they’re drawn to and the little details that feel personal to them. From there, I begin putting together a mood board, incorporating florals, linens, candles and bespoke styling elements together to create something that feels romantic, intentional and completely reflective of who they are. My goal is always to design a wedding that feels effortlessly beautiful, deeply personal, and unforgettable from every angle.

Blooms By Mel, Founder Melinda Paterson

Blooms By Mel offers both floral design and wedding styling. How does combining these services create a more cohesive and elevated experience for couples?

By offering both floral design and styling, I’m able to create a wedding experience where every detail feels beautifully connected and intentionally designed. Rather than florals and styling being treated as separate elements, I approach the entire space as one cohesive vision, from the floral palette through to candles, linens, stationery and overall atmosphere. This allows me to ensure every detail complements one another seamlessly, creating weddings that feel layered, refined and effortlessly elevated. For my couples, it also creates a much smoother and more personal experience, as they have one creative direction guiding the entire aesthetic from beginning to end.

You specialise in lush, abundant florals that feel effortlessly beautiful. How would you describe your signature style, and what continues to inspire your creative direction?

I’d describe my signature style as romantic, ethereal and garden inspired,  florals that feel abundant and luxurious, yet still effortless and organic in the way they move and flow throughout a space. I’m drawn to layered textures, tonal colour palettes, sculptural florals and thoughtful styling details that create depth and atmosphere without ever feeling overdone. I also love to include plants in my ceremony designs, as having a background in horticulture, I feel this is my signature touch, bringing even more of the outside in.

A lot of my inspiration comes from the garden, editorial design, and the emotion behind each couple’s story. I’m constantly inspired by creating weddings that feel personal and immersive, spaces that not only look beautiful, but make people feel something the moment they walk in. I’m all about creating “ a feeling “ as well as a beautifully styled and flowered wedding.

Wedding styling is often what shapes the guest experience beyond the ceremony itself. What details do you believe have the greatest impact in creating an immersive celebration?

For me, candlelight is one of the most powerful details in creating emotion and ambience. It instantly softens a space and creates that romantic, intimate feeling guests remember long after the night ends. Florals also have an incredible impact, not only visually but in how they shape the scale and energy of a room, whether that’s lush tablescapes, statement installations or delicate details woven throughout the day.

Beyond aesthetics, I think flow is incredibly important. The way guests move through each part of the celebration, how the ceremony transitions into the reception, and how every space feels connected creates an experience that feels seamless and immersive rather than just visually styled.

Ultimately, the weddings that leave the biggest impression are the ones that feel deeply personal to the couple. When guests can walk into a space and instantly feel the couple’s personality, story and atmosphere reflected throughout every detail, that’s when a wedding becomes truly memorable.

From florals and candles to linen, vessels and custom table elements, your styling considers every touchpoint. How do you ensure each layer works harmoniously without feeling overdone?

For me, it begins with balance.

Whether it’s florals, candlelight, linens, vessels or custom table details, I approach each layer as part of one complete story rather than individual styling pieces. I also believe negative space is just as important as abundance — giving the room to breathe is what keeps it feeling elevated instead of overwhelming.

The goal is always to create a wedding that feels luxurious and immersive, yet still effortless and natural in the way it all comes together.

Many couples are moving away from traditional wedding aesthetics in favour of something more personal. What are you seeing couples prioritise when it comes to styling and design in 2026 and 2027?

Couples are definitely moving away from traditional wedding aesthetics, they are wanting their wedding to feel about them in ways that are so different from traditional weddings.

I am seeing more immersive experiences throughout weddings, from custom scenting throughout a venue to create a sensory experience guests instantly associate with the wedding, more live musicians roaming throughout the different spaces, interactive food and beverage experiences like oyster bars, espresso martini stations, grazing installation and late night snacks.

More “moments of design” statement floral installations guests can walk through, tablescapes more “editorial style” with custom printed linens to sculptural candles, an array of fruit and vegetables and my favourite, draping table ends.

Your stationery and signage offering adds another level of personalisation. How can bespoke printed elements help bring meaning and storytelling into the wedding day?

It’s often the smaller details that make guests feel truly connected to the experience — a meaningful quote, custom illustrations, handwritten touches, layered textures or design elements inspired by the couple’s story. When stationery and signage are designed cohesively alongside the florals and styling, it creates a wedding that feels immersive, elevated and deeply personal from beginning to end. I work with two of Melbourne’s top designers to craft unique stationery and signage. Once I have a true understanding of the couple's story and what matters to them the most, I use this information along with my floral designs to draft what I think will work well together and we go from there in creating bespoke stationery.

When designing a wedding, how important is the venue in shaping your floral and styling decisions, and how do you work with a space to enhance its natural character?

The venue plays such an important role in shaping the overall floral and styling direction because every space already has its own atmosphere and character and we need to work within this.

Florals and styling have the ability to completely transform a space, but I think the key is balance. Sometimes that means leaning into the venue’s natural beauty with soft, organic florals and refined styling details, while other times it means creating contrast through layered textures, statement installations or dramatic candlelight to add depth and atmosphere.

For couples at the beginning of their planning journey, what advice would you give when investing in florals and styling to create a wedding that feels beautiful, considered and authentically theirs?

My biggest advice would be to focus less on trying to recreate trends and more on how you want your wedding to feel. The most beautiful and memorable weddings are the ones that feel personal, intentional and reflective of the couple themselves.

When investing in florals and styling, I always encourage couples to prioritise the elements that will have the greatest impact on the overall atmosphere and guest experience.

I also think it’s important to invest in a creative team you genuinely trust. When your florist and stylist understand your vision, your story and the experience you want to create, it allows the entire design process to feel seamless and collaborative rather than overwhelming.
