MUD Australia Founder Shelley Simpson

Mud Australia was founded in 1994. Available in over 80 styles and 20 colours and designed by Shelley Simpson, the porcelain range combines hand-made processes, clean lines, colour palette & functionality. The end result is a product that neatly intersects a minimalist aesthetic with an artisan finish. Our porcelain happily fits in any interior, providing a timeless alternative to mass produced ceramic design.

Made in our Sydney studio using porcelain clay sourced directly from Limoges, France, the pigment is tinted to the clay body at slip stage to provide colour depth. Clear glaze is applied to the interior of each piece leaving the exterior with a vitrified stone-like surface that becomes smooth with handling.

Mud Australia porcelain is handmade in our Sydney-factory by our staff of professional and amateur ceramicists. Each piece is designed to last and manufactured using the best materials available.

We gladly adhere to Australia’s strict employment, environmental and health regulations. All glazes and porcelain bodies are non-toxic.

Our porcelain is oven, microwave, dishwasher and food safe—making it ideal for domestic and commercial use at the table and in the kitchen.

Mud Australia is pleased to announce our event hire service developed specially for weddings. The hire service allows you to access bespoke Mud Australia dinner settings and serving pieces for up to 60 settings.

We’ve also redeveloped our Registry website, allowing couples better functionality, more product choice and reporting.

Couples using our Wedding Registry are now able to include the entire Mud Australia Store’s offering. This includes our own range as well as the covetable Cutipol Cutlerias flatware from Portugal, beautiful linen from Mourne in Northern Ireland, and olive wood products from Andrea Brugi in Tuscany.

Every registry also qualifies for a voucher valued at 10% of your spend, redeemable when your registry is finalised.
I’m inspired by the small events of every day and the landscape and colours that surrounds me. Similarly, all the colours in the range story together, with different combinations creating different moods.
I’m passionate about handmade local manufacturing, it’s the core of our business. People are drawn to our product because it’s got a real honesty to it which you can’t replicate with machines and you can’t manage from afar. By keeping production under one roof we’ve been able to stay consistent to our process and the integrity and identity of the product.
Every piece in the range exists because I needed it in my everyday life. It’s perfect when I can create a new piece using the silhouette from an existing piece.
